Magic Shows in Chicago: Must See Performances in The City

What is Chicago-style magic?

Before covering the best magic shows in Chicago, a history lesson is in order. According to local history, the original of Chicago-style magic can be traced back to a single location- Schulien’s Restaurant. In the 1920’s, the now-closed Schulien’s began the tradition of having a magician perform for guests as they waited for their food to arrive.

The performing magicians were confined to a small space at the end of a table or booth, and had only a short amount of time to sufficiently entertain patrons. Because of these constraints, the performers had to be quick with their hands, and quick with their wits. In fact, a table-hopping magician may have only performed one or two “tricks” and the rest of the performance was filled with gags and quips.

The people loved it. During the 20th century, Chicago-style magic spread across the city and found its way into other restaurants, taverns, and bars. The magic shows in Chicago quickly became world-famous.
